The FBI Investigation: Jess Blanch

Jess is a Publisher and the Editor-in-Chief of RUSSH Magazine.
With over a decade leading one of Australia’s most influential fashion publications,
Jess has built a career spanning journalism, fashion media, creative consulting, and industry leadership.

FBI: You started in newspaper journalism before becoming Editor-in-Chief at RUSSH —
what was the biggest turning point that led you into fashion media?

Jess: Journalism led to custom publishing and that is where I fell in love with the process of creating a magazine.
I still don’t really think of myself as ‘fashion media’ as I feel like a storyteller (whether visually or with words) first and foremost.
When I began with RUSSH the digital media world was in its infancy and naturally that was an incredible opportunity.

FBI: How can emerging Fashion Students stand out when applying for roles or internships?

Jess: Apply for internships at companies you truly love.
We can tell when interviewing someone for RUSSH if they are a consumer of our brand and a true fan.
Skills can be taught but we want someone with a natural curiosity for our brand and the world we operate in.
I’m also an advocate of applicants sharing their strong interests and obsessions.
I love nothing more than someone having a strong point of view, even when it may not naturally align with ours.

FBI: If you could go back and interview any creative in history for RUSSH, who would it be and why?

Jess: As a Publisher and Editor in Chief, it is rare to have the opportunity to write and interview.
I’m more likely making wish lists of creative minds to assign our writers and Editors to.
In the earlier days when the business was less resourced and I wrote more regularly,
I came very close to an interview with David Lynch. He’s my ultimate as a creative person
and I love his view on humanity.

FBI: What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever received?

Jess: Be highly discerning as to who you listen to advice from.
It’s the answers we find within ourselves that suit us the best.
